Rims start out life as "blanks". The blanks go into a CNC and the cutting and shaving begin. A raw blank weighs about 40 pounds. The finished rim typically weighs about half that. So basically half the blank ends up as aluminum shavings, just like what I am holding in my hand in this picture. Mike Osborne estimates he recycles about 2,000.00 of aluminum shavings every month.
